Marks of a Disciple // Marked by Love

John 13:1-5, John 13:12-14, & John 13:34-35

Love like Jesus happens when we live in committed relationships.

1. New “Clothes”

Jesus is more than a courteous host. He becomes a gracious slave.

Philippians 2:5-8

Barriers to loving like Jesus: entitlement and expectations.

“The body of Christ is full of people who are standing on their dignity when they ought to be kneeling at the feet of their brother.” – John MacArthur (Sermon on John 13)

Colossians 3:12-15

2. A New Command

The old command never went away, it had just taken on new meaning through the cross.

“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” –

Tim Keller, The Meaning of Marriage

The humility of the cross cleanses us from sin and then compels us to serve others.

3. A New Community

MARKS OF A DISCIPLE // Connected in Community

I Corinthians 12:12-13, I Corinthians 12:24-27

1. God made us like him to live in relationships.

Genesis 1:26-27

Humanity expresses God’s image in relationship. Being made in the image of God allows man to establish “worthy relationships with God, with one another, and with the rest of the creation. – ESV Study Bible, p. 51.

2. God gave the church to express biblical community.

The Gospel places us into the community.

“The fellowship of the church is part of God’s good news to men. It imparts to the gospel one of its most thrilling notes—that when Christ saves a man he not only saves him from his sin, he saves him from his solitude.” – Total Christianity by Frank Colquhoun

The Aim of the community is to collectively imitate Jesus as we do so individually.

Acts 2:42-47 — what does this community look like?

1. Shared practices.

2. Shared heart and mind.

3. What are the barriers to biblical community?

Individualism

Isolation

Consumerism

Idolatry

“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” – Timothy Keller, The Meaning of Marriage

4. What are the steps toward biblical community?

A. Commit to the body.

Baptism

Dinner with the Staff

Worship

Life Group

B. Commit to deeper relationships within the body that will serve others.

Men’s and Women’s Studies available.

Journey classes on Wednesday evening.

C. Love One Another – the mark of a disciple that Jesus says is paramount.

Question: Are you in community? Are you in relationships with others that encourage and challenge, convict and build up around the Word of God?
