Philippians | Week 8: A Joyful Discovery

Philippians 3:1-11

Paul’s Heartfelt Appeal (Philippians 3:1)
Paul’s Words of Warning & Affirmation (Philippians 3:2-4)
Paul’s Joyful Discovery (Philippians 3:4-11)
A. An Example to Avoid: Paul’s Past Life in Judaism (Philippians 3:4-6)

Like most ‘religious’ people today, Paul had enough morality to keep him out of trouble, but not enough righteousness to get him into heaven! It was not bad things that kept Paul away from Jesus—it was good things! He had lots of reasons for religious self-confidence, but he had to lose his ‘religion’ to find salvation. – Warren Wiersbe

B. An Example to Follow: Paul’s Present Life in Christ (Philippians 3:7-11)

It was the power of Christ in him that allowed Paul to face difficulties with a sense of holy abandon, full of joy, not because he enjoyed suffering, but because Christ’s resurrection gave Paul a unique perspective on present suffering such that struggle was transformed into intimate fellowship and identification with Jesus… it’s only in the participation of His sufferings does one truly come to know Christ intimately. – Gordon Fee

Scrap your Religious Resume for a Relationship with Christ
1. Guard the Gospel

Compared to a holy and perfect God, the loftiest Everest of rules amounts to a molehill. You cannot earn God’s acceptance by climbing; you must receive it as a gift. – Philip Yancey

2. Set Aside Any Spiritual Pride

I am righteous and accepted by God because __________.

3. Know Christ

May not the inadequacy of much of our spiritual experience be traced back to our habit of skipping through the corridors of the Kingdom like children in the marketplace, chattering about everything, but pausing to learn the true value of nothing. – A.W. Tozer

Philippians | Week 7

Philippians 2:19-30

Our greatest desire is to be known. But likewise our greatest fear is to be known. – Jeff Patton

So what’s at stake is the gospel being passed on and lived out.

1. Relationships require life-on-life intentional investment.

The fatal flaw of human wisdom is that it promises that you can change your relationships without needing to change yourself. – Paul David Tripp

2. Relationships reproduce the life of Christ in me and others.

Paul calls on the church to imitate him as he imitates Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1 | Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.

Christlikeness is self-interest, self-comfort, and self-focus aside for the sake of God working in others.

“It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.” – C.S. Lewis

3. Relationships bring enrichment and endurance to our walk with God.

To find a mentor | Whom do I learn from and respect, want to be more like?

To find someone to train | Whom is dealing with things in life God has brought me through?

To find an encourager | Whom do I identify with in my season of life, is walking a similar road?

Philippians | Week 6

Unity through humility towards others in the body readies you to reach others outside the body.

1. God energizes His people on the inside so they reach people with the gospel on the outside (Philippians 2:12-13).
2. Grumbling and the gospel do not mix (Philippians 2:14-16).

A. We are called to imitate the selfless humility of Christ.

B. Our gospel witness to others is on the line.

Tom Nelson: “You can’t peddle or sell unapplied truth and expect it to impact others.”

3. The gospel reaches people when we pour ourselves out for others.

Is there some person, some neighborhood, some city, some people group for whom you are willing to pour out your life?
