Marks of a Disciple // Connected to Christ

Trellis and Vine

Trellis and the Vine, by Colin Marshall and Tony Payne // 9Marks Review

What is the state of the Trellis and the Vine at Taylors?

What is the state of the Trellis and the Vine of your life?

John 15:1-11

Jesus: the Vine. // The Father: the Gardener. // Believers: the branches.

New model for the disciples: Jesus, instead of Israel, is the means of bringing glory to God and blessing to all people.

Fruit: His life produced in us, and his life produced in others through us.

1. Recognize the work of the Father.

a. Takes away branches that are unproductive and lifeless. (John 15:2, John 15:6)

b. Prunes branches in order to bring about healthy growth and fruit. (John 15:2)

Pruning can be painful but is necessary if we desire to be like Jesus.

How do we respond to pruning?

1) anger – upset we don’t get our way;

2) pity – despair and overwhelmed when we don’t get our way.

2. Remain in Christ

John 15:4-5

Nothing of eternal significance happens without remaining in Christ.

a. Time

b. Transformation

Quote: “Worry is dealing with tomorrow’s problems on today’s pasture” – Jewish thought via Ray Vander-Laan.

c. Practice

The reason we obey is not because we desire to be good, but because we are moved by the love and obedience of Christ. (John 15:9-10)

Marks of a Disciple // Called

1. Gather – encounter God in worship and in community

2. Grow –engage with others around the Word

3. Go – extend the gospel locally and globally

Mark 1:14-20

1. Imitate — “Follow me.”

a. He sees what we can become.

Result: We become like the Master.

b. He sees what stands in the way.

Response: obedience was immediate, complete, and costly.

2. Invest — “I will make you become fishers of men.”

a. It begins with the growth of believers.

b. It extends to reaching the lost.

Next Step: What is your net? Leave it behind and become a disciple of Jesus.
