Marks of a Disciple // Marked by Trust

Scripture records Jesus saying more about money than Heaven and Hell, prayer and faith. – Randy Alcorn,

Managing God’s Money

Matthew 6:19-21

A new thinking, a new way of living for a new community. What does this mean for how we handle money and possessions?

1. Prioritize future, eternal investments over today’s, earthly pursuits.

Earthly things don’t last (Matthew 6:19)

Eternal investments ultimately matter (Matthew 6:20)

Assessment of Jesus: Where your treasure is, there I’ll find your heart (Matthew 6:21)

Declaration of Jesus: You either serve money or me (Matthew 6:23-24)

We try so hard to create heaven on earth and to throw in Christianity when convenient as another small addition to the so-called good life. Jesus proclaims that unless we are willing to serve him wholeheartedly in every area of life, but particularly with our material resources, we cannot claim to be serving him at all.

Craig Blomberg, Matthew, The New American Commentary, 124

Cure for a divided heart: see God as the owner of all things (1 Chronicles 29:10-13)

2. Pursue the kingdom and watch God take care of you.

Once a trust builds to prioritize God’s kingdom with what he’s given us, then contentment builds that he will be able to provide (Matthew 6:25-34)

a. Calculate how you currently use your money

What do I take in, save, spend, and give to the kingdom?

b. Assess kingdom giving

Am I faithful first with my tithes and offerings to the local church? If able to give beyond to other kingdom opportunities, is it bearing fruit?

c. Evaluate decisions on money, possessions this week in light of a heavenly perspective.

Remember 1 Timothy 6:6-8

d. Give generously when given the opportunity to impact the kingdom this week.

Remember 1 Timothy 6:17-19

e. Pray that God will open your heart, mind and eyes as to how you can demonstrate greater allegiance to Jesus this week.
