Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. Proverbs 14:34
Most High, Almighty God, Master and Creator of the universe, we humbly bow before You and worship You. We thank You and praise You that You hear the prayers of Your children. We are deeply grateful that You have given us, your children, the privilege of coming into Your presence because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ our Savior. We thank You for your unending mercy and grace that You have poured out upon our nation. We know that in times past You have delivered us in times of war, reunited us after conflicts among ourselves, and filled our lives with such abundance. Your blessings to us overflow our borders. Yet, we have been guilty of taking all of this for granted, even to the point of turning some of this abundance into idols of worship. We sincerely repent of our personal and national sins. We come before You now, in desperate need of your forgiveness. We confess that the liberty You so graciously gave us has become to us a license to do as we please. Our culture mocks You, and our highest courts are esteemed above Your word. We take no solace in the fact that some of us have not personally embraced the sins of abortion and marriage redefinition, but by apathy or indifference have allowed evil to flourish. We lament the walls that divide us, even as we continue to segregate ourselves from one another. We have been idolatrous, stubborn, prideful, dishonest, corrupt, greedy, fearful, compromising and ungrateful. Instead of embracing righteousness in our nation, evil acts abound as the norm. As a nation, we have fallen far short of Your glory; we have not repented and returned to You. Instead we and our leaders have sought to live out of our own strength, thus raising our fists of defiance to Your judgments. Master, have mercy on us. We ask for Your forgiveness, Father, not because of who and what we are, but because You are kind, loving, merciful, and longsuffering.
Father, revive us, Your children, and the church in America. No longer can our nation stand a sidelined church, taken out by worldliness, compromise, fear, and confusion. We believe Your word when it commands us to no longer allow ourselves to be conformed by worldly patterns, but rather transform us by the renewing of our minds. Only then will we understand Your will, not just for our own lives, but also to be a prophetic voice to our nation. Revive us to be the light and salt the nation so desperately needs. Revive us so that we will speak with boldness as we take Your message to the masses, so that lost people will hear and turn to you. Revive us as we seek not so much of and from political power, but to speak Your wisdom into political and cultural situations that so need a word from You. We beseech You, O Lord, to “become jealous for Your land and have pity on Your people.” Please revive us again with a fresh outpouring of Your Holy Spirit, for without You, we are lost. Then, O God, may all the kingdoms of the world truly know that You are our God, and that we have no other gods but You. May we be a beacon of Hope lifted to the world, a people free to serve You and one another, in genuine love. And Lord, begin in my own heart.
I pray this prayer in the Name and power of the risen Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.
