It was two years ago this month that we started Sunday Night basketball with the purpose of fellowship for a new believer at our church who did not have a lot of friends who also loved Jesus. It started out with barely ten of us on the first night. Two months into the weekly Sunday night routine of basketball with some men from the church, one guy invited someone he had met playing basketball to join us. This guy was not a believer but just looking for a place to play basketball. The Lord used this one invite to turn Sunday Night Basketball into a major outreach opportunity for our church. We are now averaging about 50-60 guys every Sunday night, most of who are not believers. We have a team of volunteers that show up weekly to run the scoreboard, have conversations, and take turns sharing a 5-7 minute devotion each week with the guys.
In the past two years we have had about 300 different men and women from our community show up to play basketball. We are thankful for the opportunity to proclaim the gospel each week through conversations, proclamation and prayer. Due to the growth of Sunday Night Basketball, we are going to be launching a Monday Night Basketball for only High Schoolers in our area with the same purpose to build community and introduce them to the only source of hope in our world which is Jesus.
