The Value of Worship in the Life of the Church

As believers, private worship is an important part of our daily walk with Christ. Encountering God in daily worship includes spiritual disciplines like reading the Bible, praying to God, singing to the Lord, and calling on Him. While daily private worship is important, it is not the pinnacle of our Christian lives.

The Psalms lead the way in helping us understand the value of worship in the life of the church. King David in Psalm 34:3 exclaims, “Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” This call to worship is one where David doesn’t want to worship alone. He calls on others to join him and worship God with him. I love this verse because it declares a powerful truth about worship.

We were made to worship Jesus together.

Corporate worship is the life-giving encounter with God and his people that rekindles our spiritual fire each Sunday. When we gather together around God’s Word, singing, praying, and fellowshipping we are being built up together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit as Ephesians 2:22 reminds us.

At Taylors FBC one of our values is Christ-Centered worship. This means that Jesus is the center of our worship every time we gather together. When we proclaim the excellencies of Christ as we sing, the Spirit moves in our midst and is shaping us to be more like Christ. Our aim is to rehearse the gospel of Jesus and reflect the heavenly worship we see in Revelation 7:9-10.

a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb…and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Corporate worship not only forms us to be more like Christ, but also realigns our heart to see the lost, not just our own needs. When we see Christ, hear His Words, are moved by His Spirit, we begin to see others around us who need the gospel. And Christ sends us to a world that needs the good news of Jesus.

Let us encourage one another with this exhortation from Hebrew 10.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
 Hebrews 10:24-25
